Photographs are terrific things. They let you relive memories of times gone past, capturing a moment and preserving it forever.

It’s also a great way to relive the magic of Disney when you aren’t in the park anymore. For me they can be a great pick me up when I am in need of cheering up, remembering all the good times and adventures that I had in the parks (of course, they can also serve to bring me down because I’m not in the parks at the moment!). They are also great ways to preserve days of Disney gone by, letting us fire up our Wayback Machine and visiting things from Disney that no longer exist.

A fantastic way to mix the Wayback Machine and using photos of the park as great Disney memories?

A little strategic planning, of course.

Find a photo spot in Disney, and each trip you go there (even if your visits are years apart!), take a picture of you and your loved ones in that same spot! After a few visits you’ll have a nice chronology of images that not only takes you on a great walk down memory lane, but also serves as a look at how the Disney Parks have changed over the years.

Perhaps the most obvious spots are the park landmarks: Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom, Spaceship Earth in Epcot Centre, the Chinese Theater (or newer, Mickey’s Hat) at the Hollywood Studios, or the Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom. But you can also come up with some unique spots as well, because Disney always has some great places for pictures!

Some of my own favourite places include the Adventureland bridge, in front of Spaceship Earth, or my absolute favourite… a picture of me with Mickey. Not only do I change in the pictures as I get older, but Mickey’s sense of style changes with time as well (he’s such a stylish guy, eh?).

A tradition KP and I started when we worked at Disney World, and our subsequent visit to Disneyland, was to get a picture of the two of us in front of the Haunted Mansion, since it is one of our all time favourite attractions. In our trip to Disneyland we also started a new tradition with our friend C – can you tell what movie we borrowed the idea from?

(If you guessed High School Musical, then you must be as big as Disney Geeks as we are. Congrats!)

Now I realise in my last post I say to be flexible, so do keep that in mind when planning, because you never know what great snaps you might get by being open!!

Happy picture taking!

Everyone has a favourite.

Mine just happens to be Spaceship Earth.

Why I love Mama Melrose

Nestled in the back corner of of Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a little restaurant that I love, Mama Melrose. Its a quaint place behind Muppet Vision 3D and the Toy Story Pizza Planet Arcade. There is nothing flashy, you aren’t sitting in the back of a car, there are no characters to meet and you don’t get a magic wand to take home. But through my visits through the park, this little Italian restaurant has won me over.

Perhaps I am little biased as I love Italian food, but to me, the food was de-lic-ious! The flatbreads, aka thin crust pizzas, are cooked in a wood fire oven and really hit the spot. For me, it’s often a tough choice between those or the oven-baked chicken alla parmigiana which is a favourite of mine. Also favourites among my friends include the Spahgetti Fra Diavolo which includes clams, calamari ,mussels and shrimp over pasta and the warm chocolate truffle cake. Every meal also starts with complementary fresh bread. Of course it wouldn’t be an Italian restaurant without the wine, and this place has a large selection to choose from to complement your meal.

Not only is the food great, but to me the atmosphere is fun and relaxing. Hanging from the roof are white christmas lights and adorning the walls are various Italian inspired decorations. Along with the red and white checkered table cloths you are given the impression that you have stepped into a scene from Lady and the Tramp.

Inside Mama Melrose

Since the restaurant is hidden in an inconspicous place it tends to be a little less busy than the other restaurants. You can often walk in and make a reservation for that day or even have minimal waits without reservations. They also offer a Fantasmic package where you get reserved seeting to see the show which can come in handy when you have a family who does not want to line up and wait for a good seat. This package should be reserved ahead of time though because it does fill up.

All in all it’s a great place to escape the hussle and bussle of the park and sit down for a nice meal. I’ll admit that Andy does not feel quite the same love and adoration for it as I do; she thinks it’s just alright (see her last post about ‘comprising’ in the parks). But if you want cozy, comfortable and delicious and not glitz and glamour then I would highly recommend Mama Melrose the next time you stop by Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Mickey Knows How to Bust a Move!

Earlier this week was the grand opening of a brand new store to Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney. It’s called D-Street and according to Disney is: “Fusing urban art and Disney’s creative flair, you’ll find stylish clothing, jewelry and merchandise from trend-setting designers”. So all in all, it pretty much sounds like a place I foresee spending all my money in the future.

Of course Disney doesn’t just ‘open’ a store, they put on a show! And of course this means calling out the big man himself, Mickey Mouse! If your looking to put a smile on your face, watch this clip of Mickey along with three other dancers showing off their dance moves!

Indiana Jones or Fantasmic?

When asked what the best thing about the parks is, the obvious answer is probably “attractions!” The attractions make up a large part of what makes Disney great, because when Disney does something they give it 150% percent. This isn’t your hometown amusement park, Disney is pretty much “theme” park to a T.

Attractions, however, is a catchall term for the things that really attract people to the park – rides, shows, fireworks, concerts. In Disney’s case, one could even say the restaurants, shops, and generally everything there should be considered and attraction (but that’s a discussion for another time).

While KP and I both love Disney attractions, what part of attractions that we like tends to differ. Don’t get me wrong, we love everything there. But the two of us have our preferences… things that top our list of stuff we just gotta do when we’re there!

For KP that would be the shows and fireworks. Many an hour was spent sitting and scoping out a good spot to watch various shows, or showing up early to get a good seat in the theater. I do vividly recall sitting about two hours on frigid concrete to get the prime seating to see the second show of Fantasmic. I even recall as we were buying some Mickey Ice Cream bars from one of the carts just in New Orleans Square that KP and our friend C refused to watch the first show of Fantasmic because they didn’t want to spoil it, and the view where we were wasn’t that great. I on the other hand had no problem watching as the chimney sweeps danced away at the top of the riverboat – and unfortunately for the girls, the chimney sweeps didn’t make an appearance at the second show.

Mickey kicks off Fantasmic!

Mickey kicks off Fantasmic!

Now I like seeing a show or the fireworks as much as the next person, but at the end of that night I was chilled through to the bone. Sitting around all that extra time to see a show when I could be doing or seeing something else in the parks isn’t my cup of tea.

Myself on the other hand, I prefer the rides. Disney does ride theming to the max, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a classic dark ride, a kiddy ride, or an E-ticket ride – I love ‘em. I will try to ride my favourite ones as many times as possible. I probably drive KP nuts with wanting to go on the same things over and over again – can you say riding Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye a bajillion times in a 5-day trip? Oh yeah, I love it! But after the third… fourth… fifth time, there are other things we could be doing and seeing.

So what do we do when we go to the parks together?

Ah the beauty of compromise.

I sit on cold concrete for several hours, and KP rides the same thing a bajillion times. Sometimes we split up and go our own ways (particularly when KP wants to stand in a three hour plus lineup for the Princesses… sorry KP, but the call of Space Mountain was strong!). Most of the time though, we take turns deciding what to do.

“Okay, we’ll go and grab Fast Passes for Indiana Jones…”

“And then go grab great spots for the Parade of Dreams, and by the time it’s over…”

“Our return time for Indy will have come up!”

Andy and C waiting for the Parade of Dreams.

Andy and C waiting for the Parade of Dreams.

And yeah, I could have ridden Indiana Jones one extra time, and maybe KP could have gotten an even better spot along the parade route…

But if we hadn’t ridden Indy so many times, would we have made a game out of figuring out what the symbols on the walls meant (without using the key)? Or if we didn’t go so early to see the fireworks so early, would we have had such a riot freezing our butts off, taking turns to dash through the park to have hot food, and taken in the beautiful lights on Sleeping Beauty’s Castle?

Probably not. We would have missed some of that magic if we hadn’t compromised.

So remember, even if you go to the parks with a set plan in mind… make sure you’re flexible and try to compromise. Because you never know what you might miss.

One of Many Hidden Mickey’s

One of the things Andy and I love about Disney is all the little hidden things that you may not notice at first glance. The imagineers are geniuses when it comes to the subtle details and what they excel at is the Hidden Mickey. To bring a little Canada to you all,  here is a picture of one of the totem pole’s in the Canada Pavillion in Epcot. See if you can spot the Hidden Mickey!

The Elusive ‘Kiss Goodnight’

During my many hours researching everything Disney on the internet I had found out information about a so called ‘Kiss Goodnight’. Rumour? Old event? created to drive KP mad? All plausible answers.

In fact, the ‘Kiss Goodnight’ entails a short 3 minute audio recording that is played in the hub of the Magic Kingdom after park closing when guests are still trickling out of the various lands, making their way down Main Street. It’s accompanied by changing colours on Cinderella’s castle and ending with a “See ya real soon” from our pal Mickey. It isn’t anything special, often being compared to the water parade in the Seven Seas Lagoon. It’s more something to entertain the guests as they walk away, a goodbye if you will. But I pride myself on watching every show and riding every ride available in the Magic Kingdom and therefore I must see the ‘Kiss Goodnight’.

After finding multiple YouTube videos of it, I knew it existed. Now all I had to do was catch it! I asked Andy about it, yep she’s seen it, of course. I questioned many of my fellow Disney employees, the majority of which had no idea what I was talking about. The few that did knew about as much as I did; that it played sometime after park closing and not every night. So I set out on my quest to stay in the park till after closing to finally see it.  Many nights I listened, watched and waited patiently….nothing.

To this day I have yet to view it. Referring to it now as my unicorn, the elusive event I have yet to witness. I hope to one day be able to write a blog entry about finally seeing the ‘Kiss Goodnight’.

In the Meantime you can watch a video of the \’Kiss Goodnight\’ at MaketheMagic.ca\’s Youtube Channel

Horns of a steer… but a loveable fellow!

My friend Steph commented that our blog didn’t have enough Figment. So for today’s Media Monday, we’re firing up the Wayback Machine and bringing you an audio ridethrough of Journey into Imagination. The original version, not the the one with Dr Channing. Nothing but classic Figment and Dreamfinder. :-)

Sit back, close your eyes, and enjoy the next 20 minutes!! One little spark.. of inspiration..

Four Parks, One Day

Sounds like an impossible task: visit all four theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort. There are many naysayers who don’t think it can be done. But KP and I took on the challenge – and did it! Not only that, but we managed to ride one attraction and see one show at each of the parks!

To celebrate our having worked one month at Walt Disney World, we decided to take on this challenge.

On June 27th, 2007, we set out from our apartment in the morning (after having slept in a bit even) and headed to the Animal Kingdom. Initially the plan had been that we would each choose something in the parks to do (our friend Carol was with us), so that meant accomplishing three things in each park.

Park #1: Animal Kingdom

Park #1: Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom was busy that day, and thwarted our attempts to get on Kilimanjaro Safaris. But we snagged a fast pass for Kali River Rapids, and then headed for It’s Tough to be a Bug. On our way back to Kali, we passed the Finding Nemo musical and decided to go for it. Luck was on our side this time, as we managed to get into the theater despite the long line and wait before us. From there we used our Kali River Rapids fast passed and took the plunge. Luckily KP and I didn’t get wet, since we still had a long day before us!

KP worries she may get wet on Kali River Rapids.

From there we caught the Disney Transport bus over to Disney MGM Studios (now called Disney’s Hollywood Studios). I’d never ridden a Disney Transport bus before, and it was pretty quick between parks.

At MGM we grabbed lunch at the ABC Commissary, and then jumped on the Backlot Tour. Unfortunately we weren’t lucky enough to get chosen as volunteers for Harbour Attack. From there we caught the High School Musical Pep Rally, which is always an upbeat and fun show to see.

With a quick snack (slushies, yum), we headed out of the park and towards the Friendships to head to park #3 of 4…

Epcot! Before we’d left for our adventure that morning, we’d called the Disney Dining Reservations hotline and managed to snag a reservation for dinner at Alfredo’s in the Italian Pavilion. Such great food there (unfortunately Alfredo’s no longer exists). Definitely the best alfredo and food ever! While we were there we were serenaded by two of the wait staff. When we left we were all quite full, but that didn’t slow us down. We headed towards Norway, and managed to get onto the Maelstrom. From there we made a quick stop in at MouseGear, then jumped onto the Monorail for…

The Magic Kingdom! The last park we needed to see! While we were on the Monorail from the Transportation and Ticket Center, we could see Wishes going off above MK. It’s quite a beautiful sight to see from the Monorail. We made our way through the post fireworks crowd to Tomorrowland to ride Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and have a nice evening ride on the Tomorrowland Transportation Authority. Our last ride of the night was the AstroOrbiter.

So to all those disbelievers out there (and yes we did talk to many that day who couldn’t believe what we were doing, or those who thought we wouldn’t succeed).. it is possible to do all four parks in one day! It’s actually quite a fun adventure, and if you have a day where you want to give yourself a challenge, I recommend you try it! Considering we’d planned it very little, we succeeded fairly well.

Four parks, one day. Do it!
